Urgent message for  BEA Members:

You may recall the security breach approximately a year ago that exposed BEA members’ information including social security numbers.   This week one of our BEA members experienced fraudulent transactions made against them using the compromised information.  Because of this, the BEA is urging all members to be diligent keeping up to date on all financial transactions and to be aware of your current credit rating standings.  Please contact us at braintreebea@yahoo.com with any questions or related issues.

Question 3 on this year's ballot proposes cutting the Massachusetts sales tax by more than half to 3 percent.  The MTA has joined the Massachusetts Coalition for Our Communities to oppose Question 3 because the sales tax brings in necessary revenue for local aid that provides our communities with good schools, a strong public higher education system, safe roads and bridges, police and emergency response services, health care options and much more.

Please, help us get the word out and defeat Question 3 this fall.  Here are things you can do:

1.     SIGN UP FOR EMAILS at http://VoteNoQuestion3.com,
and forward the e-mails to your friends, family members and
neighbors to help them understand the issue and get involved.

2.      "LIKE" VoteNoQuestion3 ON FACEBOOK at
         http://facebook.com/VoteNoQuestion3.
Share the posts on your own wall.

3.      FOLLOW VoteNoQuestion3 ON TWITTER at @votenoquestion3.
         a.      Re-tweet the No on 3 campaign tweets using "old-school"
                  RT @VoteNoQuestion3: format.
         b.      Use hashtag #mapoli and @VoteNoQuestion3 in your own
posts when you talk about issues concerning local aid and Question 3.

4.      WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR of your local newspaper or
major daily. Use the sample letter at
         http://VoteNoQuestion3.com/letter-to-editor.php to get started!

5.      PRINT AND SHARE THE FACT SHEET at
         http://votenoquestion3.com/fact-sheet.pdf

Thanks for helping the Massachusetts Coalition for Our Communities defeat Question 3 and preserve vital funding for public education, public safety and our communities.

We Stand to Lose our Rights to Bargain Health Insurance
Please Act NOW!

Right now, the Massachusetts legislature is considering two proposals involving health insurance:
    1)  a proposal by the Massachusetts Municipal Association
(MMA) to strip away our right to bargain for our health
         benefits.
    2)  a proposal supported by the MTA and public employee
unions that preserves our bargaining rights with a neutral
arbitrator (if the parties deadlock in negotiations) to ensure
that a settlement is fair to both the municipality and
         employees.

The MMA has mounted an aggressive lobbying effort and we need to quell it with thousands of messages to both state representatives and senators.

Please visit www.massteacher.org and click on the ACTION ALERT!  link that will guide you through writing to your legislators.  You may compose your own message or use the message on the site.  Follow the instructions and your message will be delivered automatically to the State House.

Please include the following points in the message:
  • support our collective bargaining and oppose the MMA proposal or any other proposal that would eliminate collective bargaining for health insurance.
  • protect retirees by including them in the process.

Please do is AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for the sake of all of us and our families.

Building a Better School

How do you close achievement gaps?

How do you get parents involved?

And students engaged?

Although one Oklahoma school doesn't have all the answers, they certainly have quite a few.

The following article is from page 16 of the
MTA Today, Volume 40, No.5/June-July 2010

Repeal of offsets remains top priority for NEA and MTA

Legislation that would repeal the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision continues to gain new co-sponsors on Capitol Hill.

The House version of the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R.235, now has 327 co-sponsors.  The Senate bill, S.484, has 31 co-sponsors.

All members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation - except recently elected U.S. Senator Scot Brown- are co-sponsors of the repeal proposal.

The GPO reduces the spousal or survivor benefits of public employees by an amount equal to two-thirds of their public pensions.  The WEP affects people who have worked in jobs in which they have earned Social Security as well as jobs in which they have not.

So far this year, the congressional agenda has been focused on health insurance reform, jobs and national security, leaving little room for action on other items, including Social Security.

But repeal of the offsets remains a top priority for NEA and the MTA.  Social Security reform will have to be addressed in Congress soon, and the NEA will be pushing for repeal of the offsets as part of any package.  In the meantime, the association continues to raise the need for repeal in as many different legislative venues as possible, including during discussions of the need for recruitment and retention of talented educators.

To receive regular updates on the effort to repeal the off-sets, please send your name, complete address, MTA ID number, current or former local association affiliation and home e-mail address to Jo Ann Fitzgerald, MTA retired members service specialist, at jfitzgerald@massteacher.org.
